Disabled person on Irish Television – Shock! Denied Access – No Shock!

Posted by Maman Poulet on 29 Dec 2007 | Tagged as: Disability, Irish Media, People In Need

RTE and the National Lottery could not make the set of Winning Streak accessible for a disabled participant to play the various games. Derek Mooney did the things that she couldn’t do. Equal Status Act how are you!

That is my abiding memory of Saturday night telly – after I got over the shock of seeing a disabled person on the television that is – not talking about their disability. Pity they had to buy a scratch card to do so. In fact it is not the first time I have seen someone with a disability on Winning Streak – maybe that’s how all disabled people are supposed to get on television if they are not starring in People in Need.

Michael Lynn get’s his own advertising campaign

Posted by Maman Poulet on 18 Dec 2007 | Tagged as: Michael Lynn

This time of year there are ad’s for music, perfume, electric toothbrushes and lady shaves. Now we can add run away solicitors. Maybe it will be like the mortgages he arranged for the houses – He seemed to specialise in Buy One Get One Free!

Michael’s wife does not know (subs. req.) which country he is in. The banks want his house, well more than one of them. The Gardai have not involved Interpol and someone swears they saw him in London on Friday. This one is going to run! (Well it will have legs dancing on Maman Poulet for a while yet!)

Athlone Institute of Technology did not discriminate on Gender grounds

Posted by Maman Poulet on 15 Dec 2007 | Tagged as: Equality, Niall McElwee

Update: – The Full Text of the Equality Officers Report can be read here.

I await the publication of the report of the Equality Tribunal hearing reported in today’s Irish Times. Dr. Sheila McGree claimed that she was discriminated against in the appointment and employment conditions of Dr. Niall McElwee. The Irish Times reports (subs. required) today that

Dr McGree said Dr McElwee received favourable treatment when they both competed for a senior lecturer position which Dr McElwee was eventually appointed to in 2003.

She alleged that, although he was given the title of director of the centre for child and youth care learning, the centre does not exist. She said Dr McElwee had been given two days a week for research purposes alone, instead of one day for other lecturers, and he was given unfair advantages in the supervision of student research. His attempts to develop the research of other lecturers, most of whom were women, was “sexist”.

The Equality Officer found that AIT had not discriminated on gender grounds and Dr. McElwee’s prilvedges were as a result of his higher status.

I’m wondering who the new Director for the Centre for Child and Youth Care Learning at AIT is since Dr. McElwee’s resignation after his convictions for attempted indecent assault were discovered. I don’t see the title in the advertisement for a replacement for Dr. McElwee – closing date 20th December if anyone is interested – the starting salary is approximately €75k.

Michael Lynn and the Merriman Lynch Connection

Posted by Maman Poulet on 14 Dec 2007 | Tagged as: Michael Lynn

It seems that the firm of Merriman Lynch solicitors are old acquaintances of Michael Lynn’s – Years ago he used their London office address to make out he had a UK office and it is been suggested to MP that the arrangement was reciprocal (with a name like Merriman Lynch one would not be surprised..)

One wonders was he really planning on them being his legal team at all at the beginning of the week or was it a delaying tactic to plan the Pina Colada’s? Interpol are looking for him now on behalf of the Garda according to the Sun today (so it must be true) but nothing can happen even if they found him until charges are put to him.

So in the interests of research I had a look at the Interpol Wanted page – we might expect a Red Notice to be issued shortly.

HSE is now in the undertaking game

Posted by Maman Poulet on 14 Dec 2007 | Tagged as: Athlone Institute of Technology, Niall McElwee

The HSE seem to specialise in publishing burying inquiry reports in December. The Department of Health claim not to know when Brendan Smith, Minister for Children, will be receiving a copy of the report into the circumstances surrounding the handling of information on the conviction of Dr. Niall McElwee. They refer callers to the HSE. The HSE say it’s publication is imminent and due before the end of the month – that means next week. (insert ironic exclamation mark!)

Given this week’s publication and attempted burial of the McCoy report into abuse in institutions run by the Brothers of Charity in Galway you’d think they’d realise we’re not all thick.

Bock has more on the McCoy Report. I’m still waiting for the Devine Report and will be doing a Lazarus on it should it be given the pre Christmas rush out.

Michael Lynn and Ray St John Murphy

Posted by Maman Poulet on 14 Dec 2007 | Tagged as: Fact Check, Michael Lynn

The last time that Michael Lynn, (the solicitor wanted by the High Court for contempt, and wanted by the Law Society for questioning, and wanted by clients for taking their money and misappropriating it, and wanted by his staff for not paying their wages) was seen by his wife was in the offices of Merriman White Solicitors in London. Ray St John Murphy was Senior Partner there and he told the High Court that he was still awaiting instruction from Michael Lynn.

Ray St John Murphy was fined £25,000 by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal earlier this year for mishandling of client funds, bad accounting practices and other offences. His former colleague Jeremy Wolff was struck off during the same hearing. In the full judgement of the Tribunal where agreements were done to save face and time I found the Tribunal ruled in the matter of handling insurance claims and payments on behalf of clients and the general administration of the law firm. The ruling contains the following censures against Mr. Murphy.

108. Mindful of its duty to protect the public and ensure that the good reputation of the solicitors’ profession is maintained the Tribunal concluded that it was both appropriate and proportionate to impose upon Mr Murphy a fine of £25,000.
109. The Tribunal recommend to The Law Society that Mr Murphy should in future be permitted to practise as a solicitor only in employment which has first been approved by the Law Society.

So before his trip to Carnival or wherever, it looks like Michael went in search of some expertise in the area he required it.

Happy Christmas Michael Lynn

The High Court have adjourned it’s hearing until January 14th. Michael did not show up in court this morning. The Banks are discussing their options. Happy Christmas Michael, how’s the weather?

Fergal ‘Two Jobs’ O’Malley

Posted by Maman Poulet on 13 Dec 2007 | Tagged as: Athlone Institute of Technology, Fact Check, Fergal O'Malley, Niall McElwee, Uncategorized

Is the snobbishness so much between IT’s and Universities that they don’t check out each other’s full time staff lists? What did Athlone Insitute for Technology think that Fergal O’Malley was doing in Galway? Shopping? NUIG wouldn’t notice too much – heads of department get lots of time off to be heads of department, and research? Well that means that one can get Phd students and post doc’s to do it for you. Doesn’t it? Either than or he was on the Berocca!

All in all, it’s been a bad year for Athlone Institute of Technology, first Niall McElwee who was found guilty of lewd behaviour and didn’t tell his employers for 3 years and they didn’t find out that the head of child and youth care learning centre there had a criminal record. Now the double jobbing engineering lecturer with two pensions is exposed. Anyone thought of the students in all this?

Michael Lynn and the Copa Cobana

Posted by Maman Poulet on 13 Dec 2007 | Tagged as: Michael Lynn

So has anyone checked out the citizenships or passports held by the errant solicitor, Michael Lynn, currently on the run from answering a few questions in the High Court? If I were a Garda (I can hear the laughter from here!) or the Law Society I’d be looking towards Rio! Maman Poulet is told that Michael has citizenship there.

Plenty of time to get ready for Carnival 08 (here’s a recap of Carnival 07) – and well extradition?? That would be a bit difficult me thinks. Any Brazilian readers spot him? Or anyone got anything else??

Update: Thanks to the legal bod who reminded me that Michael Lynn cannot be extradited on a matter of contempt and no criminal charges have yet been laid against him. Yet.
