Scrap civil marriage altogether. The state has no business marrying anyone, that's for Churches to do. The benefit of civil partnership is that it is a contract like any other.

Isn't the Dáil on limited duties when the strike is on? Will that affect the debate, and hence passage of the bill?

Thanks for the tip on that! Good news everybody.

While the civil marriage people have merit of course, I would envisage civil marriage coming once those opposed
/ambivalent to civil partnership begin to see that heterosexual marriage isn't threatened (following the experiences of Netherlands and Sweden if memory serves).

Converse to the stance of those opposed to us, there may be a whole new life given to marriage and family... don't the anti-gay marriage crews get that? We'll do more for 'wedded bliss' than they ever could!

Pragmatically, the need for some sort of recognition for same-sex couples should be brought in as soon as ... perhaps it is wisest now to ensure the Civil Partnership Bill includes as much 'bang of our buck' as possible, esp re children, tax, pensions, and welfare.

I'll be watching the proceedings live on the Doyle-cam thingy...
