Sticking legislation through during a freezing cold strike day etc. does seem like putting it through when the eyes of the nation are on the "March of the Newry Shoppers II". Dead of night, etc., wonder will there be a vote or collective nod? We're still not really cherished equally, but it is better than nothing.

I completely agree with you on the somewhat unhelpful linking of sexual politics. What seems to be neglected is how the State is complicit in the sexual abuse saga, it is deeply troubling to see a politician 'spin' the line that there is some sort of (non) connection, ie putting it out that there isn't a connection, etc.

We're a community in own own right, with our own specificities, and that isn't stated often enough these days! As a community, we are a sexual minority in this Republic and - as Professor Richard Kearney (UCD Philosophy) argued over thirty years ago - we have a right to be a minority. We might add that we have a right to be recognised as such in law. I don't think we need to be compared to any other group. We are on the cusp of being recognised as sexual citizens who form loving relationships and families, so our moment in the (pale winter) sun should not be diminished or diminished.
