Gay TD to be outed?

There’s a closeted gay TD story doing the rounds – well the rounds of national and provincial journalists who have nowt better to do with their time. This stuff is very 1990’s and can’t have any impact as there has been nothing with regards to voting for anyone elected recently to be hypocritical about – possibly the only reason I might (and that’s a heavily guarded might) support outing. So why is it happening now?
I don’t think journalists should determine sexual morality in the same way I don’t think the Catholic Church should make hay about the issue. But the gossip raises a wider and more interesting point.
If we’re a modern liberal country [yah dee yah dee yah], why is a supposedly gay public representative in the closet about his (assuming its a bloke) sexual orientation? I think the impact is not so much about voting records, but I would have thought it is about visibility. The question for me is why (assuming someone is gay) does that someone feel disclosure is problematic.
