To be honest I think this is part of a bigger issue of the total non-regulation of counselling and help services in Ireland. I can go out tomorrow and put a sign on my door, call myself a "life coach" or something equally funky and charge gullible clients what I like. It extends beyond pregnancy counselling to debt advice, various forms of therapy, diet centres and life coaches, some of the above most definitely shamelessly exploit and/or manipulate clients or provide misleading information that could be harmful.

In the state of California you need 5000 supervised hours of experience in order to qualify as a family and marriage therapist. Here you can print off business cards calling yourself a "Consultant in XXXXX issues" and nobody can stop you. In fact there was one person barred from Outhouse a year or two ago for doing just that. If there was proper regulation for counselling centres and services in general and practitioners in particular, it would help people to assess if the person they are going to is a genuine fully trained professional or an exploiting charlatan with an agenda all of their own.
