I am delighted that Obama won. However I am a bit concerned by the news that 70% of African American voters in California voted for Proposition 8 (or Proposition H8te as it should be called) thereby denying gay Californians the right to marry. Obama’s victory is a powerful symbollic victory for the US but it’s sad to see that intolerance remains alive and well. Equality is a right. It is NOT a privilege that should be granted to someone based on their race, gender or sexual orientation.

Hi guys- Just reached Boston from Ohio in wee hrs of this morning. word is- that Samantha Powers the Irish woman with the big grasp of national security affairs who Obama had to drop because she called Hilary ” a monster” in an unguarded moment, is to be his new national security advisor. Good move- actually great move by Obama.

I had exactly the same reaction to the coverage last night. The almost pathological obsession with the fact that a black-man was being elected President was disconcerting to say the least, and the tone was all wrong on all the channels I saw (though the beeb were probably the best of the lot I think).
