Given that Willie O’Dea confessed that a garda source gave him damaging (but incorrect) information about a political rival, and given that Willie was forced by the Greens to resign from his ministry, there is at least one person with a motive, an inside source and a track record.

The denials supported by Trevor et al that FF didn’t leak the letter doesn’t preclude the possibility that it caused it to be leaked.

The Constituent – but did he have a copy of both to give even if he wanted to give them??

Ditto the Gardai – under what circumstances would they be able to have the letter from Sargent to the constituent?

That thinking led me to believe it was the first option, but word I heard from someone I know working on Kildare St is that the speculation there does not go beyond the prime suspect that has Cowen so defensive.

The Greens are hopelessly naive about this and Senator Twitter’s ‘I feel the pain’ tweet, just shows how they’re detached. Dignity? They lost their dignity when they got into bed with FF and the rump of the PDs. When Fianna Glas bloomed from the compost of the programme for government, you knew straight away it was toxic and now, like Roman Emperors, they’re eating their own entrails. It has to be the worse government ever?

If you see another “scandal” soon, then you can be sure the opposition is picking off the weak sheep from the flock. I would have thought that it is too risky, surely, for another FF member to be doing this? Perhaps Enda has a big file of sins?

While hapless Cowen was critical on the RTE news tonight, he didn’t seem to have any fire left in his belly, so he knows the endgame is nigh and that he cannot – in the face of these sort of scandals – get to govern properly (giving him the benefit of the doubt on that too!) And – that he actually appeared on the media says that he is deeply worried… as he should be.
