Athlone Institute of Technology were in the dark?

July 13th, 2007 · 4 Comments · Fact Check, Niall McElwee, Uncategorized

Well the Midlands Health Board and a member of An Garda Siochana (and his colleagues) knew about what happened in Amsterdam? So why didn’t Athlone Institute of Technology? The assault took place during a health board funded visit.

Update:

So the issues?

  • The Garda look like they are doing their usual – ‘this is what happened and this is what we did and the other people didn’t do what they were supposed to.’ It is classic Garda Press Office tactics – I’m not saying that the health board should not be the focus of attention here but don’t let the Gardai off just ‘cos the press office are very quick out of the traps.
  • McElwee had colleagues in AIT – they work with people in the health board on a regular basis in the arrangement of placements for students – someone there knew something and information had to have been exchanged.
  • And the HSE – well here we go again – it does not matter if it was before the HSE was the HSE.
  • Other third level institutes are rushing to issue statements – as well as spending all day googling and ending up on this site. Waterford Institute of Technology indicated they had problems with the material used by McElwee when he worked there – not sure what this means but it must mean something if they are commenting on it.
  • Why are we hearing about this now anyway? (Ok I’m glad it is known about it now) But are there Industrial Relations issues at the heart of this and is this why AIT don’t know anything about it or say they don’t?

I knew that Mc Elwee was In Amsterdam in his capacity as Head of the child and youth centre, but just heard on RTE Drivetime now about the Garda on the trip who then informed the Health Board on his return as Mc Elwee’s behaviour. Ever get the feeling there’s an awful lot more to come out about this?

Like Marie, I heard the Drivetime report and it’s mind boggling that the episode in Amsterdam was seemingly brushed under the carpet until recently. I wonder who blew the whistle on Dr Jenkyl McElwee. I googled his name and if his antics in Holland hadn’t been known, one would almost award him a sainthood for all the ‘work’ he has done in the ‘interest’ of children and young people. What a mud-minded scumbag he is.

You can read more about the Amsterdam case in Friday 13th’s examiner [if you can post the link MP], it is more direct and states what the case entailed – quite stunning.

However, it is the way it was brushed under the carpet, as Ned put it, that concerns me. In the aftermath of the Brendan Smyth affair in Ireland, I’m appalled by how lax the system is and how inappropriate behaviours are (still) tolerated. As someone who has researched family life in Ireland, i am worried if victims of abuse or vulnerable families might trust social work interviewers/ researchers less in future. Bad day for those of us who want brush under carpets.
