Female Bloggers and Our Commenters

Shane Hegarty writing about blogging and nastyness and commenters in particular wonders about heterosexual male privilege. In particular he wonders if women bloggers

do attract particular nastiness;

and with reference to the practice of commenting generally

how much the anonymity allowed by comments threads gives people licence to be homophobic, racist or sexist; and whether it’s rare – or depressingly common.

While I think about my reply why don’t you go over and comment yourself. (Nicely of course!)

    I read this thought-provoking piece too, and I’m thinking about it from the viewpoint of the reader and gender and the male gaze. Runs off to make more tea …. initial thought is a reflexive heterosexual male commentator… giggling to see you’re reading about Pee Flynn and Ted Kennedy in the sidebar as I write! Oh there’s a thesis in there…

    Is one thesis not enough??

    Other than that you are are about to get a blog post of your own shortly if you don’t start your own blog soon dear! A post on my most frequent commenter (who’s a dote and very fecking intelligent with it!)

    Actually you’d probably love the notoriety – I usually only blog about straight men who fuck up in some way!!

    But seriously…will ya ever get yer arse out of cleaning the cats litter tray and get to wordpress and sort yourself out into expressing some liquid modernity or something??

    A previous attempt to comment here failed.
    Just would like to say that most contacts I have made on the Internet are exceptionally pleasant, regardless of gender. People who “go for each other bald headed” are to be avoided, both there and in real life.

    Great blog. Thank you.
