Leo’s off again

Poor Enda Kenny – it’s not often that you’ll hear me say that. Today on reshuffle day the eye should be on Brian Cowen’s minimalist reshuffle and demoting of Mary Hanafin. But instead all eyes tonight are on Leo Varadkar who I mentioned yesterday as having a go at Garrett Fitzgerald over the weekend at the FG conference in Killarney.

Today Leo had another go and Fergus O’Dowd TD wasn’t happy at all again on twitter this evening and later on RTE’s Late Debate.

The transcript of the Debate on the reshuffle is just up on Oireachtas.ie and I think this one might run. Garrett is a national treasure – he may not be a saint but he’s not Charlie Haughey and that runs him up a lot of esteem ladders. If Enda does not sit on Leo I fear Dr. Varadkar will be as popular in FG as John Deasy but very popular in FF.  (Brian Cowen calling him Dan Quayle did make me smirk.)

Deputy Leo Varadkar: The Taoiseach does not even understand what public sector reform is about if he thinks that sort of nonsensical triangular arrangement will be successful.

There is another strange Department that will be responsible for community, equality and the Gaeltacht. It will also be responsible for disabilities and the integration of immigrants. It should be called what it is, which is a Department of the miscellaneous. Anything that could not be housed elsewhere has been shoved into this one and there will be a Minister for the miscellaneous.

This is an appalling botch job. The Taoiseach is no Seán Lemass, Jack Lynch or John Bruton.

The Taoiseach: The Deputy is no John Kennedy.

Deputy Leo Varadkar: He is a Garrett FitzGerald. He has trebled the national debt and effectively destroyed the country.

The Taoiseach: The Deputy is the Dan Quayle of Fine Gael.

Deputy Leo Varadkar: He has brought us a wasteful botched job of a Cabinet reshuffle. It is the last thing he will do so he should enjoy writing boring article in The Irish Times in a few years.
