Waster

August 27th, 2009 · 5 Comments · Irish Politics

Paschal Donohoe is a rare breed – a politician who blogs and tweets his way through the summer. Yesterday’s blog entry was rather special though.

Our Oireachtas is now led by a man who is literally a waster. I can’t understand why he is still in his job and why he hasn’t commented on a month of revelations.

In the UK the Speaker of the House of Commons resigned because he did not represent the spirit of where the Commons needed to go in the future. How can the current Ceann Comhairle represent a spirit of change?.

Usually, Fianna Fail does not do resignations and has a history of sheltering wrongdoers. But the sheer scale of the outrages he has inflicted on the Irish taxpayer means must make his position untenable, even in the eyes of that Party.

The fact that he is the Ceann Comhairle- the Speaker of the Irish Parliament- makes his resignation even more urgent. The esteem in which politicians are held is at an historic low. We cannot allow the reputation of the Houses of the Oireachtas be dragged even further into the mire by this man.

Is this the first nail in the Ceann Comhairle’s political coffin?

If you don’t know what Senator Donohoe is talking about and have not been reading the Sunday Tribune  and the work of Ken Foxe or Gavin Sheridan’s show and tell  on Gavinsblog you should hang out there a bit and see the bills mounting up on Minister’s cars to horse-racing and between terminals in Heathrow Airport and asking the FAI to get him tickets for Manchester United matches and money paid to ‘Indians’ for portering the luggage.  It’s the story that took the silly out of ‘silly season’.

Nice link, Suzy. His thoughts are interesting and it does certainly seem that Pascal has the interests of the little peopole at heart. I think what is scandalous is how this is being ignored by so many people and swept under the carpet by others. 28k is more than many people earn before tax in Ireland today. But O Donoghue has now a long history of gaffes and it really much be asked how few brain cells his constituents need to lack in order to persistently vote him back in.

Do really think that the views of a Fina Gael senator are going to affect a senior FF TD’s chances of survival?

Not the word of a senator (even those of his colleagues who are also thinking of it) but the drip drip of the results of FOI’s have damaged JOD and his lack of explanations (and his former department’s) are even more damaging.

Bulls always leave a mess in their wake, never to mind the BS they produce.

GUBU hasn’t gone away, you know! It’s just delicious to be witness to the slow-mo political car crash. If political expenses are becoming an issue (as opposed to the bribery/ corruption type stuff of tribunals), perhaps the drip, drip you see is a melting iceberg?

Am I right in thinking Bertie had to cajole him into being CC? Are these expenses the product of this (his) political choice/ appointment? Anyone else being given foot massages, back rubs for their support then? What did Bertie lube to get power?
