Campaign Diary #13

Spotted canvassing in Dublin West for the bye-election for FF candidate Cllr. David McGuinness, was one Rory O’Hanlon, former boss of Sean Gallagher. He was accompanied by Brendan Smith TD.  By pure chance I met Cllr McGuinness’s father on Wednesday night. Very proud Dad.

I’m told O’Hanlon didn’t mention Gallagher during the canvass, the eyes were firmly on the Dáil seat.

Speaking of Dublin West’s bye-election, Political Geographer Adrian Kavanagh takes a look at the constituency.  There are 12 candidates!

Mary Davis wants to remind people about the real issues. She’s using her last contribution to the Primetime Debate in this video.

Dana’s campaign posted this on her facebook page yesterday.

‘Sending out our CANVASSING posters to supporters who looking for materials. Many thanks everyone!’

Is she dropping out – it doesn’t look much like from that.  I wonder if she really spent much money on the election.  A lot being made that she needs a quarter of a quota to claim back expenses but I’m not sure she’s spending a whole lot anyway.  No posters or big tour bus anyway. I doubt it’s €200,000.

So You’d Like to be President is a youth event/forum taking place this Saturday organised by  Spunout.ie, an independent national youth organisation.  Sara Burke is hosting the event, there will be candidates and questions from the audience of 16-25 year olds.  No tickets remain for the event but you can watch it online.  It begins at 2.30pm.

Martin McGuinness had his rally in the Mansion House last night with videos from celebrities and New York business types, the big entrance, appearances by former GAA players and Colm Meaney and many SF members visiting from ‘up there’ .  The post rally function was in Lillies.

The Irish Times were out with Gay Mitchell in DCU yesterday.  I note that Young Fine Gael women canvass with their handbags.

Airline boss Willie Walsh spoke at the Dublin Chamber of Commerce dinner last night and referred to the presidential election as ‘almost farce’.  He feels Mary McAleese will be an impossible act to follow. Expect more of that from business types as the clock ticks down.

Paddy Power has a video ‘skit’ out featuring Michael D and Sean Gallagher, well versions of them anyway. I assumed we’d see better attempts at humour before the end of the campaign. But now I’m not holding out much hope.

Finally I would welcome any links to posts, videos etc which look at the forthcoming referendums .  It’s time to get informed and the issues have nothing to do with sprinkles or ice-creams.
