The Donegal News reports this that former Fine Gael member and current current Letterkenny Town Councillor Jimmy Harte is considering joining the Labour Party. The paper reports that Councillor Harte confirmed contact had been made by senior Labour Party officials in recent weeks. He is considering the proposition and the carrot of a nomination to run for the party in the Donegal North East constituency in the next general election.
Cllr. Harte has observed a number of other independent politicians including John Kelly in Roscommon and former TD Jerry Cowley from Mayo join the party in recent months. Rumours have circulated for some weeks that former PD TD Mae Sexton was considering joining the party and the Longford Leader is reporting that she will declare for the party tomorrow.
Harte left Fine Gael 4 years ago in protest at the decision by the party to run only one candidate, Joe McHugh, in the last general election.
