Gardai visit Today FM Studios to seek name of Cowen Painter

March 25th, 2009 · 25 Comments · Irish Media, Irish Politics, Uncategorized

Ray Darcy is talking about it on his show this morning. The show had contact with the painter of the Cowen pictures and the Gardai want to know who he was. I don’t think Todayfm staff told any telltales.

Cowengate is well and truly underway. Who complained to the Gardai about this incident and wanted the painter silenced and an investigation into the matter?

Bizarre and outrageous…I’m speechless.

Update: Been away from PC all day – will do a round up post later traffic on site has been unprecedented – just like the incident!

But I did want to point you in direction of audio from this mornings Ray Darcy Show courtesy of Irish Election.

Where exactly is the crime (apart from to the eyes)? Surely hanging satirical paintings in the National Gallery is only bad enough to get you booted out of the gallery (and maybe for you not to be welcomed back), but why call the Gardaí?

I’m equally speechless, but plan to regain the power of speech shortly in order to rant about this further. Unbelievable.

Isn’t it funny how it’s always seemingly the smallest stories that grow legs?

Considering the painter has committed no crime, the Gardai haven’t really got anything to stand on.

This will come to known as the few days when Mr Cowen proved he’d lost it completely. Let’s see who comes from FF to wax indignantly on his behalf. I bet no one who’s truly ambitious to become FF leader after BC speaks up very loudly.

Anyone who comes out complaining about how BC’s been treated is a political dead duck, I’d say.

Those paintings are now the hottest property in Ireland. On eBay they’d fetch at least 20K euros each.

I hate to say this but I saw this all coming: Mr Cowen & Mr Lenihan are completely last souls, and have been so for weeks.
By the time they resign they won’t be welcome in any decent golf course and will have to go abroad with Fingelton for golf.

It’s official, we’re a banana republic, but without the happy distraction of a change of government every few months/years: Economy in tatters, corruption widespread according to transparency international, the super-rich are getting their accountants to avoid tax while the average worker is getting a tax hike and now our press is being censored by the governing party. What this country needs is a revolution…

To caution him. Because they know they have no charges to bring. But it is important that law enforcement powers of the state – my state godammit! – let him know he can’t get away with disrespect. I’m so angry I can hardly talk.

The country’s operating on a shoestring, the lunatics are in charge of the asylum, the bankers and their buddies have left us without a bloody shilling, the people of the inner city are living in fear of deaths and shootings between feuding drug gangs, but Ireland’s most wanted is an artist with a sense of humour, who gave us all a lift. Jesus feckin wept!

The Mail named the artist as a “Conor Casby”. Not sure where they got that info from but they had a quote as well. Might be bollocks. It was The Mail.

No. That’s what they want. Keep talking. Say anything. I spent an hour just making gurgling noises last night.

I imagine even the Gardai sent to Today FM by their superiors were embarrassed to be wasting everyone’s time, including their own, by pursuing this line of questioning. Contemptible.

The rampant abuse of state power. Proof positive that BC isn’t fit for purpose. The citizen’s right to go about lawful business free from police harassment.

Let’s notice how some cretins spin this… I bet there’ll be one who’ll say that the government press office was only expressing their legitimate right to comment.

That it was the weak ones in RTE that chose to apologise.

Mr Cowen didn’t require any apology. He wasn’t insulted. He laughed it off. [The real Brian might even try to outbid Pat Kenny for the paintings in auction.] It was the office of the Taoiseach that was brought into disrepute.

Not only did RTE insult that office and damage Ireland in the eyes of the world, but it proved itself unable to defend freedom of speech.

Now if it was up to Mr Cowen he’d reform RTE into a fourth estate champion we could all be proud of. In fact the FF manifesto for the next election will put this right.

Good old FF for spotting this weakness at the heart of Irish society. Vote FF – true defenders of Irish free speech.

  • Gerard Cunningham

Not arrested. He went to the station voluntarily. Apparently he handed over several paintings of other public figures to Gardaí. My guess is he made a cautioned statement. A file is being sent to the DPPs offide, where they’ll probably bust a hole laughing at the vanity of the great and good.
