Paul Gogarty TD was on his way to a Green Party Parliamentary Party meeting tonight (sans childer we presume) in the Department of Agriculture and he spotted this in a kitchenette.

Who says our Civil Service is devoid of a sense of humour?

There is a market opportunity for Deputy O’Rourke here – if I were here I’d be protecting image and rights and the like!

GLEN Pays Tribute to Minister Dermot Ahern

November 30th, 2010 · Elections, Irish Politics

Most of the text response to the news of Dermot Ahern’s retirement has been unbroadcastable (great profits Newstalk are making at 30c per text all the same)  The rumour had been circulating for a few weeks and now we are watching them fall (Senior FF ministers that is) as election plans have to be made and chances of winning leadership contests decline.

In just now from GLEN, their tribute to Dundalk’s finest.

GLEN today paid tribute to Dermot Ahern, Minister for Justice and Law Reform, on the announcement of his stepping down from political life, for his success in advancing and enacting the Civil Partnership Act 2010.

“The Civil Partnership Act is a great achievement that will have a profoundly positive impact on the lives of lesbian and gay people in Ireland. This Act is one of the most important civil rights advances in a generation” said Kieran Rose, Chair of GLEN.

“That Dermot Ahern successfully advanced this very complex piece of legislation through the Oireachtas with such a high degree of consensus is a major legacy of which he can be justifiably proud” said Kieran Rose.

Snowed in links

November 30th, 2010 · linkiness

Trapped in on bone protection duty. At a time of the year I can’t be trapped in but anyway, reports won’t write themselves I suppose.   A few sneachta inspired diversions for you.

– Fintan O’Toole has a new website and campaign for radical political reform.

He was a good choice for MC on Saturday’s march – I’ve still not processed the whole thing, it was like being at a funeral in O’Connell Street. A funeral for the unions or the nation or something. There was a huge non union turn out and someone has to harness that.  But it won’t be the unions probably because they can’t or maybe that should be they shouldn’t.

– Speaking of the unions, I expect to hear strong opposition to this. Crazy stuff when SNA’s and other posts are being done away with.  What’s next? Unpaid Gardai?

– Meet the weather enthusiasts at Irish Weather Online – the best thing I’ve found oh since the last weather incident.  A great twitter account and a good sense of humour predicting the trends and explaining meterological terms.  I now know what Graupel is! Do you?

– The Community Platform commissioned research on their wealth tax idea and unsurprisingly found out that a lot of people agreed with them.

– Abara, the International Disability Film Festival is on this weekend.

– From Liffey Sound 96.4fm

“Liffey Sound 96.4fm, Lucan’s Community Radio Station is making a documentary entitled “Coping, Moping, Hoping”. The subject matter concerns  the manner in which families living in Lucan have been affected by the current economic recession. If you would like to share your own story of how you and your family have been affected we’d love to hear from you.  All names used  will be changed to ensure confidentiality. We intend to broadcast the one hour documentary early in 2011.

Please e-mail studio@liffeysoundfm.ie, or cgrogan1@gmail.com if you think you may be able to help us.

– Outhouse, Dublin’s LGBT Community Centre are recruiting for a Community Worker.

– Ok if you have a spider/insect phobia don’t go here – it seems that the Praying Mantis doesn’t bit the head of her partner after they shag and the research was flawed.

Now aren’t you glad you dropped by for a read?

The Bye-Election that time overtook

November 25th, 2010 · Elections, Irish Politics

It’s election day in Donegal South West. Not that anyone cares about it anymore unfortunately. The Green Party’s decision to seek a general election early next year put paid to that. (I was going to say withdraw from government but they seem very much part of it given their support for the Four Year Plan).

Yesterday Fianna Fáil remembered their candidate and uploaded this video. Unfortunately there does not seem to be a video of Brian Cowen’s speech in Castlefin on Saturday night which by all accounts (well there was only one journalist in the room) was a barnstormer.

Enda Kenny also remembered late that there is an election today and emailed people after midnight looking for votes for his party’s candidate Barry O’Neiill.

Never in my time in politics have I seen anything like what has happened in the last few weeks. Our country is in a crisis, the like of which we haven’t witnessed since the very foundation of the State. The whole of Europe, and many beyond, are watching Ireland and waiting to see what happens next.

And today all those eyes are now watching Donegal South West. It is a massive honour, with considerable responsibility, for the people in Donegal South West to have a chance to send a message of hope and a message of change to the watching world….

…This is going to be a hard fought vote right up to close of polls – the Donegal Times, for instance, this week has a poll prediction showing Barry O’Neill and the Sinn Fein candidate neck and neck on the first count. So, make your vote count today. Be part of the start of a new era for Irish politics. More of the same just won’t do any more. We need a new start as a country. The first step begins in Donegal today.

Vote for Barry O’Neill today, or call someone in Donegal South West that you know and ask them to support Barry, and send a message that no-one in Government or beyond can ignore.

If it’s Irish

November 25th, 2010 · Irish Politics, Recession

Thomas Byrne is a Meath East TD for FF and tonight he emailed his constituents about the National Recovery Plan.

No outside interference in the writing of this plan seemingly? Not sure what the IMF were reading and commenting on or the ECB or Olli for that matter.

So this Guaranteed Irish Document (sing the National Anthem while you read it) is going to create loads of jobs seemingly and make Ireland a better place to live, to work and to raise a family.

Come dance with the Deputy.

Dear constituents

The National Recovery Plan, launched today, is a four year plan for Ireland to work its way out of recession. It is a clear and straight-forward plan to bring about a better, more prosperous and more sustainable and fairer Ireland.

This is a document prepared in Ireland, by Ireland, for the People of Ireland with no outside interference.

Now is the time to focus on our nation’s future. We must look forward with hope. We must renew our confidence, both in ourselves as citizens and as a people. The Irish people are a proud people. We are a smart and dynamic people and by coming together, we can move forward as a nation.

It includes ways to create new jobs for people who have lost their jobs; new jobs for graduates who are due to graduate college and university and ways to create new jobs for our citizens who have had to leave Ireland in search of work.

All those who want their country to prosper in to the future need to sign up to this challenge. It will involve changes to our standards of living. However, Ireland at the end of this four year plan will be a better place to live, to work and to raise a family.

If others have an alternative, let them come forward with it. I enclose a summary of the main elements of the Plan for you as an attachment.

Kind regards

Thomas Byrne TD
