Marriage/Family Campaigns and Research News

June 10th, 2010 · 9 Comments · Equality, LGBT, Same Sex Partnerships

Marriage Equality last week launched a National Poster campaign calling for Civil Marriage for same sex couples and recognition of lesbian and gay families. Funded by the Community Foundation of Ireland the posters will be displayed on Dublin Bus and in libraries, family resources and community centres around the country. Find out more about the campaign and view the other posters that are being used.

The Civil Partnership Bill (which does not recognise lesbian and gay families or the rights of children) passed it’s committee stage last month and will be headed for report stage before going to the Seanad.  The campaign is a first for Ireland but maybe a bit late for impact on the current debates taking place? It would be interesting to see where groups like Marriage Equality and LGBT Noise will go when if as expected the Civil Partnership Bill is passed in July.  Children’s Rights Amendment possibly?   After all the issues at stake are really about the children’s rights aren’t they?

Yesterday research commissioned by Stonewall and conducted by the University of Cambridge was released looking at the views of children in lesbian and gay families on their experiences of childhood.  Different Families: The experiences of children with lesbian and gay parents’ produces recommendations for schools and other agencies towards dealing with issues of homophobia and diversity.

Also this week longitudinal research from the USA was published which examined the welfare and development of ‘planned’ children in lesbian  families.  (Conducted over 17 years with 79 children) Am sure Patricia Casey and her friends in Iona will be along to knock the research presently.

    David Norris pledged last week

“I will vote against the Bill because, as it stands, it will do violence against children”

Can it be passed by July? Doesn’t the Dail rise shortly?

  • SeanR

Again, where did ya get July? Will Biffo and the funky bunch last that long?

  • Maman Poulet

It has only to go through the Seanad which sits for another month yet.

Don’t expect it to be enacted for a long time though while regulations etc. are put in place.

As for the govt. I dunno how long they will last for. FG are also in trouble – well Enda is!

How are two women a dog and a man family?

WHY DOES THE GOVERNMENT REFUSE TO NAME THE DAY?

The Civil Partnership Bill has not finished all stages in the Dail yet. The Report Stage, which may involve further amendments to the Bill, has not been reached or even scheduled yet.

The Government has pointly never said when they expect the first civil partnerhsip to take place in Ireland.

This is a Human rights issue. GLEN are to busy congratulating themselves and the Green party for introducing the bill and seem sometimes to be overly grateful for each incremental step as the Bill continues its tortoise-like progress through the Dail.

Individuals should consider lobbying their TDs hard now as I have done my own T.D., John Gormley (twice by email with no response from him other that to be told by an official in his office that the Greens had many priorities including the Puppy Farming Bill) – my next trip is to his clinic.

The Bill may not give everyone everything that they want but in my view it gives a great deal. And once its on the statute book further work can be done to inprove it. To reject it now (as it appears Senator Norris intends to do)may leave us with nothing.

I personaaly know of a couple where one of couple has died waiting for this bill to be become law.

And what about the other Bills that we are told must be passed before the Civil Partnership Bill can be enacted? Why are they not published? Why must gays and lesbians guess and speculate as to that a Civil Partnership will actually mean to them in their daily lives?

Personally I’m tired of the if, buts, maybe, could, should, will be, this year, next year, some year, sometime, line from the government and the dreamy descriptions of the golden future for gays and lesbian which the Greens promise (and congratulate themselves in advance for delivering!)but who seem unable to deliver in a proper advertised timeline.

The reality is that this Government does not know when the first civil partnerships will take place in Ireland and I suspect that they really don’t care.

The Government is the reluctant fiance who never quite names the day and even the dimmest bride eventually starts to question his sincerity.

There was a bit of fuss during the week, when Phil Hogan claimed that the Greens weren’t going to get their priority legislation through before the recess. The GP denied this, but I didn’t see the CP bill mentioned anywhere.

The Report and Final stages of the Civil Partnership Bill will be taken by the Dail on Thursday, Ist July (see Oireachtas website). If concluded on that day this will complete the Bill’s progress through the Dail and it will then go the Seanad where it will automatically be listed as a Second Stage Bill.

When the Seanad will deal with the Bill is another matter. The government has still not said when the first Civil partnerships will take place in Ireland.
