Continuing the series of ‘watching them watching us’ coming up to the debate on the Civil Partnership Bill.
Tomorrow morning on Ocean FM in the North-West there will be a debate on Civil Partnership legislation between Izzy Kamikaze a ‘fearless’ local lesbian and Mary Doherty from Renew, a fairly new organisation which was linked to the the Donegal Says No Campaign in the Lisbon Referendum. (You may remember the spat recently on Today with Pat Kenny’s Lisbon post mortem programme between the group and Jim McDaid TD.)
Renew was launched officially in May of this year and the launch was addressed by Most Rev Seamus Hegarty, Bishop of Derry, Dónal O’Sullivan-Latchford, Family and Media Association, Patrick McCrystal, Human Life International , Mary Doherty, Founder of RENEW. (Rumour has it Maman Poulet’s favourite columnist/not quite reactionary, David Quinn from the Iona Institute, was to be there too but I’m not sure if he made it!)

Mary Doherty is an interesting character having run for the Christian Solidarity Party in Donegal in the 2007 election. She is known locally for a number of campaigns including a picket outside a sex shop opened in Letterkenny.
Renew describes itself as a national group ‘valuing dignity and reviving morality’. The campaign issues for the group include
- The promotion and protection of marriage and family life
- To influence government legislation which protects and supports family life
- The teaching of sex education is primarily the role of the parent and must be taught in accordance with Catholic principles which always respects the child’s natural modesty
- The protection of children against sexualisation by the media and the entertainment and commercial industries.
- To end the commercialization of human sexuality and the objectification of women through the media, sex industries and on the internet
- To lobby the government to strengthen the obscenity laws and to impose heavy sanctions for the breaking of those laws
- The regulation of the media and advertising industry by an impartial body, independent of the industries concerned
The interview is due to take place at 9.10am tomorrow on Oceanfm (102.5fm locally and also available online). If you feel inspired to take part you can text 083 3500 530 tel 0818 365 500 or email studio@oceanfm.ie

Oh yay another loony Catholic group – just what this country needs eh?
I sent them an email asking them to clarify this claim from their website:
“[The Civil Partnership Bill] will have serious implications [for] traditional marriage and the family unit.”
I’m sick of this arguement being bandied about by religious groups, without it ever being backed up by any sound reasoning or facts and stuff.
It’s unspeak at its very worst.
Ah is that an Otter on the website beside holy mary?
‘The Right’ is so clever – the world over… this lot includes an issue of major and growing concern to all parents – •The protection of children against sexualisation by the media and the entertainment and commercial industries.
AND… they have the endorsement of a Bishop from the North where ‘The Church’ is as yet untainted by a Ryan-like report.
Not for the first time I wish I lived in Donegal so I could enjoy face-to-face harassment of this lot.

[...] as you may remember is the new ‘national’ organisation campaigning for lots of ‘down with that sort [...]
Many thanks to the renew-ed source of angst for me, ‘the government represents the common good not the minority’ nice eh! What a shower of lovelies, sure we (the gays) are not people, no human rights for us and the poor Catholics losing their rights for us lesser creatures, but hey when i do get marriage i am coming after the auld hetero lovelies, i want their marriage, that’s my plan, gay marriage to undermine their old source of supremacy. If i was a better Christian i would be using the usual rhetoric of forgive the sinners bla bla bla but you know what, i’m not a better Christian, sure that’s not possible for us evil queers so i don’t see the need to feel i should uphold their stupidity of blind religious advantage. Mary of Dunloe or whatever little pokey hovel you dragged your sorry carcus from, i reckon a mere education in citizenship would far better inform your argument and, maybe just maybe, put your blind faith/ignorance in its postdated, picked box and ready for shelving. Thank Christ religion is on the appropriate slope out of social control because it fosters fools like the present christian advocates to feel that the law is there to enforce their privilege and that this is due under their ‘moral’ righteous delusion.

Man, these people are completely sex-obsessed.
Also maybe the offer to dump civil partnership in favour of marriage should be made to them.
I would like to leave a comment to Mary Doherty regarding her comments on the Pat Kenny show.
I am a hetrosexual male that left the Catholic Church when I turned 15 years of age.
I want to know why Mary constantly refers to God and Natures law as the same, Nature and God are two seperate entities. Nature gave us evolution and dinosaurs, both proven and not part of the bible or mentioned by’God’
A further note on NATURE and natural order as Mary spoke of. The people who teaches the Popes word to the people go against Nature, they dont have children, priests spit in the face of Nature and decide not to procreate, and for no real reason. does going against Natures way make a priest better then us, how can she condemn gay people when she clings to the words of a group virgins who by choice fight Natures way.
As for Marys constant defence of her views, the views of the Catholic Church. I am confused. the Roman catholic Church is an Anti Woman organisation, just look at its Hierarchy for the proof. WOmen cant adjust or grow in the church, they would see women in a kitchen and push out kids.
Finally if Mary wants to talk about forcing rules and opinons on religious people maybe Mary can explain what the Crusades were all about.
Mary you are not a silent majority but I am glad people like you exist as you will eventually put the nails into the coffin of the corrupt, anti woman organisation that is the Roman Catholic Church
Thank you
