Michael D. tells Martin Mansergh some truths about republicanism.
Wonderful put-down, SF supporters appear all over the place. On towleroad blog (in response to a post on our wonderful debate which is worth looking at Suzy) a ‘comment’ appeared where a SF supporter claimed that SF was leading the way on gay rights (huh?). I challenged this publicly and privately to the blog owner, as I’ve no time for shenanigans. Good on Michael D…
Well this is an interesting discussion indeed because when myself and a friend watching the debate live the other night speculated if the SF contribution was mainly As Gaelige to prevent the supporters understanding the fact SF was supporting the motion. But I am little less cynical remembering that SF was indeed one of the first parties to produce a policy in the matter some years ago and also looking at the actions of the party in government in NI supporting community initiatives.
When I mentioned republicanism I referred to the contents of Mansergh’s speech and his notions of it – Mansergh’s speech as Ianmcg rightly points to in comments in another post is alarming and I’ll put up the link to it later or maybe put it up in full since people seem to be liking the bits I’m posting. I’ll get to Towlerroad soon!!
SF first passed an antidiscrimination policy on homosexuality at its Ard Fheis in 1980- I spoke to the motion. SF councillors in Belfast where the first to invite lesbian and gay groups and activists into City Hall and discuss with them actions that could be taken to support our rights and address our needs- that was in the late 80s and early nineties. Partnership rights for same sex couples is SF policy. But what a wonderful address by Michael D- his fervour and passion on the issue is inspiring and thank you, thank you Michael for a timely and necessary reminder of the principles of republicanism.
