Fine Gael Heave Liveblog

June 16th, 2010 · Blogging, Irish Politics, Live Blogging

Since yesterday afternoon a liveblog capturing the latest news, pictures, video from the Fine Gael confidence motion in Enda Kenny has been in full swing.

It will be buzzing throughout tomorrow’s meeting and beyond. If like me you have been too busy (unfortunately) and snatching news here and there you can join in the fun by dipping in and out or clicking on the more button on this post.

The tag for twitter etc. is #fgheave and of course you don’t need to be on twitter to comment or read the liveblog.

Richard Bruton has a PR company handling his press (the FG Press team no doubt being loyal to the leader – some very loyal indeed if the tales of zealotry I’ve heard about are to be believed) and you can read Bruton’s press release sent out this evening here.

It won’t all be over tomorrow of course and some are even hoping that this stuff is catching and that we might see a FF heave soon enough but I’m not betting on it.

Enda Kenny and his whispering press officer

June 15th, 2010 · Irish Politics

I heard Fionnan Sheahan commenting twice yesterday (On Today with Pat Kenny and Tonight with Vincent Browne) on an interview that Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny gave last Thursday to Sean O’Rourke on RTE’s News At One.

Fionnan said that Enda had a press officer whispering answers to him during the interview in the Dáil Studio. Enda took the prompt and immediately included it in his answers. I’m not sure if this interview and the whispers were widely known about and as I’ve been watching football and working for the past few days I went back to have a listen. (Pat Leahy had the scoop in Sunday’s Business Post). The audio is included below.

The interview begins at 2’57” and the whisper can be heard from 8’34” onwards. I won’t ruin the surprise for you with the actual words.

By the time you read this Enda could be toast but sure it’s interesting to hear all the same.

Demonstration against Dublin Pride Parade planned?

June 13th, 2010 · Equality, LGBT

Rumours are circulating that there is a demonstration planned at Dublin Pride by Cóir or related organisations against the Dublin Pride Parade and/or protesting the Civil Partnership Bill 2009.

Stewards attending training for the Pride Parade were informed that there had been two sources of information regarding the planned protests and that there would be discussions with the Gardai on the matter and a possibility for further training should the demonstrations be confirmed. (A permit would have to be obtained by the demonstrators if they plan to go ahead.)

Dublin Pride are declining to comment on the matter.  Increased campaigns and protests against the Civil Partnership Bill (and lgbt rights in general) have been noticeable in recent weeks.

Protests at previous Parade have been minor, one man stands along the route with a cross and another small group bless the route of the Parade following the marchers.   I’m seeking comment  from the Garda Press Office and Cóir and the Campaign for Conscience and will post responses that I receive.

Dermot Ahern – Mr. Nice Guy

June 12th, 2010 · Equality, Irish Politics, LGBT, Same Sex Partnerships

Dermot Ahern is interviewed today in the Irish Times. He’s Mr. Nice Guy really – well this is what he wants to let the readers (and FF TD’s who may vote in a leadership election) know.  He has quite a bit to say on the Civil Partnership Bill.

AS THE MURPHY REPORT into the Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin was released last November, Ahern warned that “a collar will protect no criminal. Was it difficult for him to say that? “No. Not at all? He laughs a little and says “no again. As a Catholic? “Yeah, well, I mean, I have been abused by a 28-year-old curate off the pulpit in my own constituency in Drogheda for the Civil Partnership Bill. Somebody half my age. He’s 55.

The controversial Bill, which he has sponsored, has provoked “a bit of a campaign against him. “I do leave my religion behind me and I genuinely mean that. While we all have our beliefs and our own religions, I don’t think it should cloud our judgment.

He says an element in Fianna Fáil will probably never be reconciled to the terms of the proposed legislation. A number of party senators were on their feet expressing concern about aspects of the Bill when former first minister and DUP leader the Rev Ian Paisley visited the Seanad just last week.

“I don’t know if you’ll reconcile them. A lot of them are implacably opposed to it, Ahern says. But their proposal to introduce a so-called conscience clause that might allow, for example, registrars to opt out of facilitating civil partnerships is “absolutely not a runner because registrars and other civil servants “can’t have an à la carte attitude to their job.

The initial media focus was on the element of the Bill that covered civil partnership for same-sex couples, which he concedes was partly “our fault.

He has agreed to change the name of the Bill to take into account that it also includes a redress scheme for heterosexual and same-sex couples who break up after cohabiting for at least five years.

Farming groups, such as the Irish Farmers’ Association and the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers’ Association, have criticised the proposed legislation. They are mistaken, Ahern says. “The IFA and others are misunderstanding what this piece of the civil partnership legislation is. It is a right to go to court. It’s not a right to get part of the estate. You have to convince the court that you’re entitled to some relief and it’s up to you to prove, he says.

Siblings who live together are reasonably well protected under law, both from a taxation and succession point of view, he says, although he might ask the Law Reform Commission to look at the area in future.

It’s a pity the interviewer didn’t ask about his decimation of the Equality Authority or Irish Human Rights Commission.  Also I think one can deduce from his imitation and reference to some critics that Ahern keeps lists of them for future reference.  Waves.

Marriage/Family Campaigns and Research News

June 10th, 2010 · Equality, LGBT, Same Sex Partnerships

Marriage Equality last week launched a National Poster campaign calling for Civil Marriage for same sex couples and recognition of lesbian and gay families. Funded by the Community Foundation of Ireland the posters will be displayed on Dublin Bus and in libraries, family resources and community centres around the country. Find out more about the campaign and view the other posters that are being used.

The Civil Partnership Bill (which does not recognise lesbian and gay families or the rights of children) passed it’s committee stage last month and will be headed for report stage before going to the Seanad.  The campaign is a first for Ireland but maybe a bit late for impact on the current debates taking place? It would be interesting to see where groups like Marriage Equality and LGBT Noise will go when if as expected the Civil Partnership Bill is passed in July.  Children’s Rights Amendment possibly?   After all the issues at stake are really about the children’s rights aren’t they?

Yesterday research commissioned by Stonewall and conducted by the University of Cambridge was released looking at the views of children in lesbian and gay families on their experiences of childhood.  Different Families: The experiences of children with lesbian and gay parents’ produces recommendations for schools and other agencies towards dealing with issues of homophobia and diversity.

Also this week longitudinal research from the USA was published which examined the welfare and development of ‘planned’ children in lesbian  families.  (Conducted over 17 years with 79 children) Am sure Patricia Casey and her friends in Iona will be along to knock the research presently.
